Lesson 1: Spanish Greetings/ Lección 1: Saludos

EN: Today we jumped on board with our first lesson and as the title of this post implies, indeed it was about Spanish greetings. I had the girls copy a vocabulary list with the basic greetings in Spanish and English, something Star wasn't too fond of doing; it was okay, I tried fixing that with some fun activities like role-playing and drawing. Since the  past few days we spent sometime knowing each other and decorating they expected that was all they were going to do, but I explained that it is going to be a fun class, but we were going to work because I had to make sure they had a basic understanding and ability to speak spanish by the end of the month. I even joked around by saying that if they ended up hating me some day after a lesson I had done my job; to which they responded: "We could never hate you, Miss Elizabeth". Oh boy, I guess hardwork it is then! (Just kidding....)  Anyways, today we did some hard work, and I was pleased with the results; they got good grades on today's assessment. Can't wait to see them tomorrow, they are a bundle of joy!

ES: Hoy nos subimos a bordo con la primera lección y como el título de este post implica, en efecto se trataba de los saludos en Español. Puse a las niñas a copiar una lista de vocabulario con los saludos básicos en Español y en Inglés, Star no estaba muy contenta de hacerlo, pero esta bien, traté de arreglarlo con algunas actividades divertidas como juegos de actuación y dibujo. Como los últimos días que estuvimos juntas solo tomamos tiempo para conocernos y decorar su jardín ellas esperaban que eso era todo lo que íbamos a hacer, pero les explique que iba a ser una clase divertida, pero que íbamos a trabajar porque tengo que asegurarme de que ellas tengan un conocimiento básico y la capacidad de hablar Español a finales del mes. Incluso bromee diciendo que si ellas terminaban la lección odiándome entonces yo había hecho mi trabajo, a lo que respondieron: "Jamás podríamos odiarte,  señorita Elizabeth". Oh vaya, creo que trabajo duro sera! (Es broma ....) De todas formas, hoy hicimos un poco de trabajo duro, y me quedé contenta con los resultados; sacaron buenas notas en la evaluación de hoy. No puedo esperar a verlas mañana, son un paquete de alegría!

"El Jardín de Tianna y Star"

EN: One of the techniques I use to keep my students motivated in a subject is to figure out what they like to do and use that as a tool to instill in them inspiration and a longing to work for that subject. The first thing that Tianna and Star told me about them is that they love to draw and paint, instantly I came up with the idea of allowing them to create their own wall for Spanish class. They got so excited and came up with the idea of recreating a garden in the wall, ultimately called "El Jardín de Tianna y Star" (Tianna and Star's garden). Before jumping into lessons I really love to get them pumped about something, so today they did their garden, the ending result: Tianna and Star can't wait to get all of their work posted in the garden. Yup, exactly the response I wanted. They even had their grandma or "Abuela" as they call her jump out of the car to come see their beautiful art work. They left very excited and telling "Abuela" how they are ready to start lessons tomorrow! I love these girls!

ES: Una de las técnicas que utilizo para mantener a mis estudiantes motivados en una materia es averiguar lo que les gusta hacer y usar eso como una herramienta para inculcar en ellos la inspiración y el deseo de trabajar por esa  materia. Lo primero que Tianna y Star me dijeron acerca de ellas es que les encanta dibujar y pintar, al instante se me ocurrió la idea de permitirles crear su propia pared de la clase de español. Ellas estaban tan emocionadas y se les ocurrió la idea de recrear un jardín en la pared, en última instancia, llamado "El Jardín de Tianna y de Star". Antes de saltar a las lecciones  realmente me gusta conseguir que mis estudiantes se emocionen por algo, por tanto hoy hicieron su jardín, el resultado final fue: Tianna y Star no puede esperar a hacer todo su trabajo para publicarlo en el jardín. Sí, exactamente la respuesta que yo quería. Incluso hicieron que su abuela saltara del carro para venir a ver la obra de arte tan hermosa que habían hecho. Se fueron muy contentas y diciéndole a la  "abuela" que ya están listas para comenzar las clases mañana! Me encantan estas chicas!



 



 



 

 

 

 

 

Girl Power!

EN: So, for the next month I will have the opportunity and blessing of teaching basic Spanish to the two most amazing girls I have ever met, Star and Tianna. We just met today, but I have a feeling its going to be an outstanding month, these two are going to learn a lot and have tons of fun! I can't wait to get this journey going.

Since, today was meeting day I didn't want to jump on board with the first lesson, rather I wanted to get to know the girls and have them know me as well. They asked tons of questions and we had fun getting to know each other. As soon as I commented that they were going to have a full wall to decorate and paste all of their work in, they jumped right in action with the planning. I handed them two sheets of paper and they drew on it what they wanted the wall to look like. I allowed them to use my special color pencils and my pastels which they loved, since they promised to take care of them and sure they did! They came out with outstanding ideas and I cant wait to see how that is going to turn out.  I loved their work and how enthusiastic they are about the Spanish classes. Tomorrow is going to be a great day!

ES: Asi que, para este mes que viene voy a tener la oportunidad y la bendición de enseñarle español básico a las dos chicas más impresionantes que he conocido, Star y Tianna. Nos conocimos hoy, pero tengo la sensación de que va a ser un mes excepcional, estas dos van a aprender mucho y a divertirse mucho! No puedo esperar a poner este viaje en marcha!

Puesto que, hoy era el dia de conocernos no quería comenzar de lleno con la primera lección, mejor quería llegar a conocer a las niñas y que ellas me conocieran a mi tambien. Me hicieron toneladas de preguntas y nos divertimos mucho conociendonos. Tan pronto les comente que iban a tener una pared llena para decorar y pegar todos sus trabajo en ella, se pusieron en accion con la planificacion. Les entregue dos hojas de papel y ahi dibujaron como ellas querian que fuera la pared. Les permiti usar mis lápices de colores especiales y mis pasteles, ya que se comprometió a hacerse cargo de ellos y vaya que lo hicieron! Salieron con muchas ideas  y no puedo esperar a ver cómo va a salir todo.  Me encantó su trabajo y el entusiasmo que tienen con las clases de español. Mañana va a ser un gran día!

Letters N,P,Q, Potty Training Update & Jahfet Self-feeding/ Las Letras N,P,Q, Actualización del Control de Esfinteres & Jahfet Se Alimenta

EN: Alrighty, so it's been a while since the last time I posted on the kids. Turns out I've been having some computer troubles (yes, first camera now computers), but I got it all sort out and I'd thought I'd update you guys on the last days of the kids before they headed out to vacations. The kids made such an amazing progress and I am so proud of their hard work and enthusiasm throughout the whole process. It is unbelievable how far we've come and how little we have left. I must say I've never been more happy with how our journey turned out.  During the last few weeks before summer we finished letters N, P and Q. By now Jahmet dominates numbers 1-20, puzzles, graphing, patterns, cutting and pasting. He has some way to go still, but he has made an outstanding progress both academically and behaviourally. His behaviour has changed so much these past few months, turns out he is an amazing big brother; always willing to help and teach the little one and an amazing student. Of course, he had temper tantrums here and there, but I cant even remember from the past weeks a day when he would cry before coming in the class. Rather, he encouraged the little one to come in and so he did. I am so happy with their team work and how they have learned to work as partners and share everything equally. Jahfet has learned so much as well, he has mastered the potty craft with us and has been very eager to learn with his brother. His motor skills have been so much better, he can feed himself and he can now grab his scissors and pencils correctly! I cant stress enough how proud I am of my boys! Below some pictures of the past few weeks.

ES: Ha pasado un tiempo desde la última vez que publique acerca los niños. Resulta que he estado teniendo algunos problemas con la computadora (sí, primero la cámara ahora la computadora), pero ya lo tengo todo bajo control y pensé en actualizarlos acerca de los chicos antes de que se fueran de vacaciones . Los niños hicieron  un progreso increíble y me siento muy orgulloso de su trabajo y entusiasmo durante todo el proceso. Es increíble lo lejos que hemos llegado y lo poco que nos queda. Debo decir que nunca he estado más feliz con la manera en que nuestro viaje resultó. Durante las últimas semanas antes del verano terminamos las letras N, P y Q. Por ahora Jahmet domina los números 1-20, rompecabezas, gráficas, patrones, cortar y pegar. Él tiene mucho camino por recorrer todavía, pero ha hecho un progreso notable tanto en lo académico como de comportamiento. Su comportamiento ha cambiado mucho en estos últimos meses, resulta que él es un hermano mayor increíble, siempre dispuesto a ayudar y a enseñar a el pequeño y un estudiante increíble. Por supuesto, hacia tenía berrinches, aquí y allá, pero ni siquiera puedo recordar de las últimas semanas, un día, cuando se ponía a llorar antes de entrar en la clase. Por el contrario, alentó a el pequeño para que entrara y así lo hacia. Estoy muy feliz con su trabajo en equipo y la forma en que han aprendido a trabajar como compañeros y a compartir todo por igual. Jahfet ha aprendido tanto tambien,  ha dominado el arte de ir al baño con nosotros y ha tenido muchas ganas de aprender junto a su hermano. Sus habilidades motoras han mejorado mucho, ya come solo y ahora puede agarrar las tijeras y lápices correctamente! No puedo expresar con palabras lo orgulloso que estoy de mis niños! Field Trip #4: The Colonial Zone/ Paseo #4: La Zona Colonial

EN: For this trip we had a special guest join us and give us a tour around Colonial Zone, my dad. He was born and raised in this area and for most the best candidate for this job. It was so much fun listening to his explanations and stories about the zone, although I've heard them millions of times ever since I was born. The kids enjoyed the tour, but most of all the feeding the doves. Jahmet thought he was one of them, he fed them, crawled in the floor pretending he was one of them and even talked to them, while the little one wasn't to fond of them, I carried him the whole time through hoping that he wouldn't cry. Overall it was an amazing day.

ES: Para este paseo tuvimos un invitado especial con nosotros el cual nos dio un recorrido por la Zona Colonial, a mi papá. Él nació y se crió en esta zona y para la mayoría el mejor candidato para este trabajo. Era muy divertido escuchar sus explicaciones e historias sobre la zona, aunque las he oído millones de veces desde que nací. Los niños disfrutaron de la gira, pero sobre todo la alimentación de las palomas. Jahmet pensaba que era una de ellas, les daba de comer, se arrastró en el suelo fingiendo que era una de ellas e incluso habló con ellas, mientras que el pequeño no era fanático de ellas, lo llevaba cargado todo el tiempo con  la esperanza de que no llorara. En general, fue un día increíble.
